Bistrica plum
The pride of Croatian orchards
The plum is a fruit that originated in Europe and Asia, but is now grown all over the world. There are several types of plums, and the most important for Croatian orchards is the Bistrica plum. In Croatia, the ecological conditions and thus the quality of the fruits are ideal for growing plums. Along with France and Italy, Croatia is the only country in Europe that has an ideal location and ecological conditions for the production of continental, Mediterranean and subtropical fruit. France and Italy have taken advantage of these advantages, while Croatia is far behind them.
The Bistrica plum, which was the most common fruit tree among Croatian fruit growers, is today unjustifiably neglected due to the hinge virus and the plum wasp. In plantations throughout Croatia, there are types that are resistant or tolerant to the hinge virus. It is the ideal foundation for various researches and works that would bring this type of plum back to all orchards. The continental part of Croatia is the best for growing this variety, and there are different names among the people, this indicates that it is an autochthonous Croatian variety.
In addition to being tasty and sweet, plums are also rich in nutrients such as fiber, vitamins C and K, and minerals such as potassium and copper. This fruit can be consumed fresh, dried or processed into various products. Besides fresh, dried plums are often used as a healthy snack. They contain a high proportion of fiber and natural sugar and are a good source of vitamins and minerals. Plum brandy is also one of the products made from fermented plums and can have different alcohol concentrations. This is a popular drink in many Balkan countries. Another popular product is plum jam, which is often used as a bread spread or as an addition to desserts such as pancakes and cakes. Besides being delicious, plum jam can also be a good source of fiber and vitamin C.
Along with these products, plums are also often used in various recipes, such as cakes, ice cream and sauces. They are also a frequent ingredient in many cuisines around the world.
